The Obersalzberg Documentation Center has been nominated as one of 35 European museums for the European Museum of the Year Award 2026 (EMYA). The award is presented by the European Museum Forum under the patronage of the Council of Europe and is one of the most prestigious distinctions for museums in Europe.

Since 1977, the European Museum of the Year Award has been given to museums that make a profound contribution to understanding the world and that establish new paradigms and professional standards within the museum sector. The nominated museums are distinguished by their creative and innovative approaches to knowledge transfer, interpretation, presentation, and social responsibility.

The nomination recognizes the extensive efforts that went into the redesign of the Obersalzberg Documentation Center and its new permanent exhibition “Idyll and Atrocity”, both of which opened on 27 September 2023. The nominated museums will present themselves and their work at the EMYA Annual Conference, which will take place from 10 to 14 June 2026 in Bilbao. The award ceremony will also be held during this event.

Following the receipt of the Luigi Micheletti Award from the European Museum Academy in September of this year, the nomination for the European Museum of the Year Award represents another important recognition of the museum and remembrance work at Obersalzberg.

The Obersalzberg Documentation Center is delighted to be part of this European network and invites all interested visitors to continue exploring the exhibition and its educational programmes.
