House rules

Dokumentation Obersalzberg is a public institution legally owned by the Berchtesgadener Landesstiftung.

The visitor regulations apply to all rooms and buildings at Dokumentation Obersalzberg as well as the grounds. They are mandatory for all visitors. Adherence to the regulations is a condition of entry to Dokumentation Obersalzberg. Dokumentation Obersalzberg operates a closed circuit television system (CCTV).

(1) Anyone may visit Dokumentation Obersalzberg during opening hours and in accordance with the visitor regulations. Visitors must pay the admission fee or obtain a free ticket before entering the
museum, exhibition, or educational rooms. Persons who are clearly under the influence of alcohol or otherwise intoxicated will be refused entry.

(2) Visitors are expected to dress and behave appropriately in keeping with the significance of the historical location. The following in particular are deemed inappropriate:

a) displaying right-wing extremist sentiments or wearing right-wing extremist symbols;

b) wearing clothing that is generally perceived as a symbol of right-wing extremist sentiments;

c) wearing badges or emblems with a right-wing extremist reference;

d) displaying tattoos or other body ornaments that could be perceived as symbols of right-wing extremist sentiments;

f) behavior or language that glorify, trivialize, or deny the National Socialist regime and/or its crimes.

g) behavior and language that do not accord with the basic free democratlc order.

(3) Visitors should behave in such a way that

a) no other person is obstructed or inconvenienced;

b) no danger is posed to the furnishings or exhibits.

(4) Children under the age of 12 will be admitted only if accompanied by a parent or other responsible adult. A visit to the exhibition is not recommended for children under 12; the decision to bring them rests with the parent or other responsible adult.

(5) During visits by school classes the accompanying teachers are legally responsible for supervising the class.

(6) If the exhibition becomes too crowded the staff are authorized for safety reasons to temporarily close buildings or parts thereof to visitors or to temporarily refuse admission.

(7) Entrance tickets entitle the holder to one visit and are not transferrable. They lose their validity when the visitor leaves the building.

(8) Entry to Dokumentation Obersalzberg is only through the main entrance or the disabled access entrance. Visitors must leave the premises at the latest by closing time.

(9) Emergency exits, rescue and escape routes, passages and stairs must be kept clear. The misuse of safety equipment is prohibited.

(10) It is not permitted to touch or endanger exhibits.

(11) Larger objects may not be brought into the exhibition rooms. These include umbrellas, sticks, backpacks, bags, scooters, skateboards etc. decisions about which objects are permissible rest with the supervisory staff.

(12) Mobility aids such as wheelchairs or wheeled walkers may be used.

(13) Visitors are liable for any damage or indirect damage they may cause to the building, to fixed or movable furnishings, or to exhibits as stipulated by the statutory provisions.

(14) In cases of suspected theft, the staff of Dokumentation Obersalzberg are authorized to detain the person in question until the police arrive.

(15) It is not permitted to make telephone calls in the exhibition rooms. Mobile phones should be switched to silent.

(16) Media players and playback devices of all kinds may only be used in Dokumentation Obersalzberg without sound or with headphones, and only if they do not disturb other visitors.

(17) Dokumentation Obersalzberg arranges guided tours of the exhibition. Accompanied tours other than those conducted on behalf of the operator of Dokumentation Obersalzberg require prior written permission. The tourguide (group guidance system) should be used during the tour. Devices must be returned to the guide at the end of the tour. Defective or damaged devices
must be reported to the guide immediately.

(18) The multimedia guide can be accessed on the loaned devices or as an app. Loaned devices should be returned to the designated drop-off point after use. They may not be taken out of the Dokumentation Obersalzberg buildings. Defects or damage should be reported to the supervisory staff. The app may only be used with headphones.

(19) Photographs may be taken in the exhibition rooms solely for private purposes and only if this does not infringe the rights or legitimate interests of third parties. The personal rights of third parties must also be observed. The use of flash, other means of lighting, tripods, and selfie sticks is prohibited. Taking photographs for commercial, scientific, or journalistic purposes requires prior
written permission.

(20) Filming requires prior approval.

(21) Animals may not be brought into Dokumentation Obersalzberg. Dogs for the blind and assistance dogs are exempt from this rule.

(22) Smoking is not permitted anywhere in the buildings or rooms of Dokumentation Obersalzberg.

(23) Food and drink may be consumed only in the designated area (basement) or outside. It may not be consumed in the exhibition rooms.

(24) It is not permitted to engage in advertising, to distribute leaflets, handbills, and the like, or to carry posters, flags, or banners. Exceptions require prior permission.

(25) Lockers are available in which to stow clothing or objects. These must be emptied by the time the building closes. Otherwise Dokumentation Obersalzberg reserves the right to clear lockers and to treat unclaimed objects as lost property. Visitors are fully liable for the loss of the locker key.

(26) Dokumentation Obersalzberg is not responsible for objects and valuables deposited in the cloakroom or lockers.

(27) The staff of Dokumentation Obersalzberg exercise domiciliary rights. Their instructions must be followed. Failure to observe the visitor regulations or the instructions of staff may result in the persons concerned being asked to leave the premises.

(28) Grave violations of these visitor regulations will be reported to the police and may result in the persons concerned being barred from the premises.

(29) Persons who have been asked to leave the premises are not entitled to a refund of the admission fee.

(30) These visitor regulations take effect as of 27 September 2023.
